Well my boy Romeo has alot of cracks in his hooves, so was wondering wha would be good to feed to get his feet nice and healthy. I don't oil his hooves, mainly because I am not sure what is a good one. Any cheap homemade recipes out there? Also, what is good to feed for a healthy coat, mane and tail? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Smiley

Currently Romeo is on Groom, Rhodes chaff, Lucerne chaff, a special mix a friend of mine makes, and all her horses are in STUNNING condition, equilibrium B, sulphur, copper sulphate and dolomite.

I've been feeding mine the MegaMin minerals since September last year and all my horse's feet are excellent, even when they're long and need to be trimmed they don't crack. My Thoroughbred gelding was one I tried to run barefoot but take the shoes off and his feet were awful, needing trims every 3-4 weeks, cracking, splitting, big chips and chunks out of them, but now he's on MegaMin (plus I have an AWESOME farrier now) his feet are great. He's been barefoot since Christmas and he's not been lame once or had split, cracked feet. And MegaMin is like $20 for a 25kg bag and I give it to 4-6 horses daily and bag lasts me months. The company that makes it is called Ag Solutions I think.

As for coats, any supplement like Groom, Livamol or feeding full fat soy or oil will improve them.

My gelding had poor hooves when I got him. I put him on Biopep and never looked back. Brilliant stuff. You only need a teaspoon a day and it's the biggest bucket! Pricey to start off with, everything is these days.
As for coat, I use either Appearance or Zanobolic from Kelato. Awesome products. They aren't exactly feeds but you put them in their feed. Appearance is a supplement to help the coat where Zanobolic is a supplement that helps the coat and condition from the inside out, even helps topline.

Mine's just started on Ezi Oil by Prydes as my friend who shows uses it, and her horse's coat is stunning. She's been using it for years and its one of the cheaper ones too.

It's one of the best oils I've ever come across and yep, definitely cheaper than some of the others out there on the market!

the only way to be sure your horse is getting everything he needs is by feeding a high quality complete feed...i feed my Clydesdale colt Hygain Grotorque and he is just a picture of health and is thriving..this feed has all the minerals, nutrients and vitamins in it for optimal hoof, mane, coat, bone, intestinal and skeletal health..so no need to add anything apart from chaff and roughage..and IF your are feeding the correct recommended amount..it will show in his overall appearance and performance Grin

Awwww, a big teddy bear. Don't ya just want to cuddle him?

On the subject of feeding the required amount of feeds though, be careful as most feed companies use TBs as the standard. Also, the amounts can be way too much for the pleasure horse, so really they aren't getting the full amount of vits and mins, so you need a supplement to balance.

Some pellets/complete feeds suggest 4 - 5 kg a day.  Shocked

The Prydes Easy Oil is the one we used to use.  It costs quite a bit but it is a 20 litre drum.  If you are just wanting to make coat and feet better, you can get away with 1/4 cup a day, but if you also wish to boost energy, you can increase the amount given.  I THINK it has Omega 3, 6 and 9??   Sorry, been a while since I bought some and we have no containers left.

Here you go.

http://www.prydes.com.au/index.php?id=products&no_cache=1&tx_prydesdata_pi3[productGroup]=11&tx_prydesdata_pi3[productFolder]=18

Contains both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, unlike corn or sunflower oils. These fatty acids are essential for brilliant coat shine and the maintenance of healthy cell membranes.

Not every stocks the Prydes range, so look at the stockists list on the site.

Hi there
I have found that my joint supplement, PROFLEX (Equitec) also helps hooves considerably, but I have started on the POWERSTANCE powdered Coconut oil from STANCE EQUINE and I'll be very interested to see how my two black come up!

I have read a lot of positive attributes regarding hair and skin health and coconut oil, so here's hoping I get the same results in the equines! I might add they also receive a balanced diet with VITASTANCE.

Google Stance Equine for their online shop or local distributer.
