I'm sorry, but he was VERY knowledgeable about it when I spoke to him 3 years ago. In fact his wife (receptionist) is just as knowledgeable. He does it for his own horses!!!!!
Now true, I wasn't looking to have a mare AI'd, I was looking at having Dowsett milked so I could ship it down to GRUMBLES. We even discussed frozen versus fresh. However, the $$$$'s he spoke of were NOTHING compared to what GRUMBLES had to pay at the other end.
The first time is a little more expensive than the other times. He has to milk the stallion and the semen must be tested to see which extender is best for it, so yes, you do have to pay for a dry run. However, I'm sure that would be the same case no matter what vet you go through as not all extenders work for all stallions.
DAIQ, you said he was double the price. Can you please pm me the name of the vet that was cheaper as there are a few people a fair distance away that may be interested if the price is right. It would definately be worth our hiring a container at the facility if that is the case.

Kirribee, try IAN out on the others too. We use him for everything. He had to operate on IZZY's leg to remove a 2 inch piece of timber that had become deeply embedded under the muscle. He has done a small eye op on Cool Moon. He treated K-oak for his fractured skull. Neighbours of mine from JENTARITT stud used him for everything and they had some doozies. If there was something he couldn't handle, he would get JULIAN WILMORE in and he would assist him.

ASH the other places I enquired were Wamuran and Oakey.

Hey, just rang. IAN does FRESH insemination, not FROZEN as he is not set up for it, nor does he have the time - as he is a one man operation.
DAIQ, it will cost you approx $300- for him to do fresh/chilled collection at your place. You just need a mare in season available. You will of course have to then pay for a courier, but that expense would depend on where the semen had to go.
If you wish to go frozen then it has to be sent onto someone who specialised in that and who can store it for you. You then have a monthly storage fee to pay, which is apparently not much. So frozen is more expensive that fresh, but IAN's part in it will cost you the same no matter whether it be frozen or fresh.
The breakdown is as follows :-
Collection Fee $150- Travel $80- Extender $25- Shipping container $35-
If you would like the semen evaluated IE sperm count etc, then that would cost you $100-. Hope that is helpful if you really want your stallions done.

DAIQ, I know where OAKEY is, and obviously we would have to take Dowsett there, so we have that expense, similar to his travelling fee I would assume.....but where is WAMURAN?

We are looking at Frozen semen. Not real sure as to how they get it though if you dont have a dummy mare. For frozen semen you also have to take a few collections so as you get enough to store. I think it would be cheaper really to take your stallion to a centre. Wamuran is the other side of Brisbane I think.

I think the distance would be the same. Wamuran have a very good reputation as well.

Depending on where you are.... Wilson's Vet at Southbrook (also known as Equivet) They are about 15 minutes out of Toowoomba and are among the best in the Southern Hemisphere. Robyn is the name of the vet who deals with reproduction and is amazing. Google them - I'm sure that will tell you everything
I agree here! Max Wilson is our reproductive vet here and he is fantastic!!
