I have always had cats, they have owned me I should say and I have always fed them can food or dried food.  Barry never liked whiskas but would eat the one serve sachets.  Gradually over time he came to like less and less food, even the really expensive ones.

A few months ago he got very lethargic and I looked up some stuff on the net.  I was surprised to find out that cats shouldn't have so much fish in their diet at all and no liver.  A lot of cat foods include liver but its no good for them. Fish should be a very small proportion.

Anyway I changed his diet to fresh pet meat in those hot pink packs called PAWS. He still has dried feed but only about 30-40 grams a day, mainly for the extra vitamins.  the change in him is incredible, he is livlier and now can actually squeak out a small miaow where before he never did.  He might have sqeaked 2-3 times in his entire life!

Also its actually cheaper as well which is just a little bonus.

i hve heard the fish thing before but rarel feed it anyway as i cant stnd the smell. thats very interesting the improvement in your kitty indy kind of makes you sad though that more effort isnt made to educate people about 'proper' diet for one of the most popular pets out there, and that the myths about fish etc are so strongly advocated and supported.... Huh?

Thats exactly what i was thinking EQ, how can they be allowed to sell so much canned cat food that is so obviously bad for yhem.  if we didnt feed them the rspca would be onto us but feeding them that stuff is crueler.  I was coming close to thinking about PTS because i thought he was going to die anyway then I changed his diet.

when you think about it its pretty logical really, strange its not a realiation that more people come up with, but in the wild, ferla cats for example, they eat predominately birds and small mammals etc, i cant say i have ever seen a feral cat munging on a fish....

I had heard about the fish thing but I rarely give it to mine anyway.

One of my cats has to be on a prescription diet so he doesn't get sick again and that food is so expensive!

cats shouldn't have milk too.

i like giving my cats fresh meat and a small amout of dry for the added stuff the fresh don't have. they get the odd can but i stay away from the fish ones. it gives them bad breath and watery smell poo. often my tonk will not eat it.

You need to be careful feeding to much dry food to male cats to the can get stones.

My 2 boys are on Royal Canin Sterile and Main Coone food.  I watch their diets as we have already lost a cat to crystals (not nice and very expensive).  they both refuse to eat fish, hate milk and tinned foods.  What can I say they are dememted cats!

A friend of mine lost her cat to fish.  I think it shuts down their liver???

Monty lives predominately on dry food, and the odd mouse or three Smiley  I do give him a little milk, but it is more milk flavoured water Smiley

I had a course last week put on by Hills (science diet food).  Apparently more and more cats are becoming allergic to fish.  The amount of pollution in the water creates  toxin build up in the fish which we inturn pass on when we feed them.
